Counselling and Psychotherapy in Ilkley
Hello, I'm Claire. I am a fully qualified psychotherapist and counsellor based in Burley-in-Wharfedale, near Ilkley. I have a Masters degree in Integrative Counselling and Psychotherapy from Leeds Beckett University and I am registered with the British Association of Counsellors and Psychotherapists (BACP) and therefore adhere to their ethical framework.
I have worked with adults in NHS primary care and in private practice. By working with various clients I have experienced how emotional distress can often emerge in our physical well-being - poor sleep, digestion problems, skin changes, blood pressure changes and energy levels can all be impacted.
Our emotional well-being has the greatest impact on our relationships, including the relationship we have with ourselves. Anxiety, depression, self-hatred, guilt, jealousy, anger, regret and sorrow can affect our daily lives so much and can seep into our very existence to the point where it becomes 'normal' to feel that way. But this normal is an unhappy one, and may have been so for a long time.
As a counsellor, I help clients with change. Research has shown that counselling is more effective when there has been an exploration of the clients past in addition to any solutions or interventions, therefore my practice is integrative in that I use a variety of approaches to achieve personal insight, desired change and increased self-awareness relationally.
Working With Me
I am qualified as an integrative therapist and counsellor which means I can integrate various approaches that help you achieve your desired goal through self discovery, reflection and guidance. For example, a psychodynamic approach can be useful in exploring how the past is impacting on your present life, perhaps transpiring in your personal and professional relationships.
Additionally, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) can be useful in working in the present by exploring and testing current beliefs and behaviours that are affecting your life, both emotionally and physically. I provide a non-judgemental, compassionate environment for you to discuss anything you wish. However, I am not a therapist who will sit with you in silence, I know how frustrating that can be, instead I provide a service that may involve gentle challenge and questioning to really get to the core of your personal experience and the beliefs you may hold about yourself and your relationships.
Together we will get you to a place where you feel more clarity about your experience and are more able to implement any desired change. This change may be behavioural, emotional or perhaps a greater acceptance of a situation that is out of your control.
We can work together either face to face at my location in Burley-in-Wharfedale near Ilkley, or online if that is more suitable.
Counselling takes place in a safe space, where you can meet with someone who will listen with sensitivity and empathy - and without judgement. In the therapy space thoughts and feelings can be expressed freely and in confidence.
Trouble with a relationship; anxiety or panic attacks; mood swings or depression - many people face difficulties in their everyday lives that can be hard to get on top of. Counselling gives us a set of tools we can use to help gain a better understanding of what’s causing these problems - and how you can move towards managing or resolving them.
Working together I can help you gain greater insight into the difficulties you are facing, help you understand why you act or react to them the way you do, and see how you can start to make better, heathier choices moving forward.
